The three crops every post goes through

  • Feed: 4:5 portrait is the tallest Instagram allows and takes the most screen, which is why it usually wins.
  • Profile grid: always a centre square, so anything important near the top or bottom edge disappears.
  • Reels cover: 9:16, with the bottom fifth sitting under the caption and action buttons.

Upload at 1080 pixels wide. Instagram recompresses anything larger and the difference shows on text and fine detail. Full dimensions are in the Instagram size guide.

Where the caption gets cut

Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters in the feed and hides the rest behind more. Everything that has to land, the hook and the ask, belongs above that line. The preview marks the cut for you.
