Monetisation

What is Barter collaboration?

A barter collaboration is a deal where a brand gives a creator free products or services instead of cash, in exchange for agreed content such as a post, reel, or stories.

Barter is the most common way new creators and micro-influencers start working with brands, especially in beauty, fashion, food, and travel. It builds a portfolio and brand relationships before paid deals.

As a creator’s audience and content quality grow, barter relationships often convert into paid brand deals.

Barter is worth taking when the product is something the creator would have bought anyway and the content fits what they already post. It stops being worth it the moment the ask includes usage rights, exclusivity, or a fixed posting schedule, because those are the terms of a paid deal. Creators should treat a request for paid usage on a gifted product as a cash negotiation, not a bigger gift.
