What Is Instagram Direct? DMs Explained (2026)

Instagram Direct is Instagram's private messaging system, and a DM is a direct message sent through it. It sits behind the paper plane icon in the top right of your feed and holds one to one chats, group threads, story replies, shared posts, voice notes, and video calls. Messages there are private, separate from comments, and visible only to the people in the thread.

What DM means on Instagram

DM stands for direct message. "DM me" means send a private message rather than commenting publicly. Instagram Direct is the feature, a DM is a single message inside it, and the two terms get used interchangeably. Instagram itself uses "Direct" in the interface and "messages" in settings.

How to check your DMs

1. Open Instagram and tap the paper plane icon in the top right of your feed, or swipe left from the feed.
2. Your inbox opens with Primary and General tabs if you have them enabled.
3. Tap Requests at the top right of the inbox to see messages from people you do not follow.
4. Tap any thread to open it. Opening a thread marks it as seen for the sender.

On desktop, go to instagram.com and click the same paper plane icon, or go straight to instagram.com/direct/inbox. Desktop supports text, images, and reactions but not voice notes or video calls.

How to send a DM

• From the inbox: tap the new message icon, search a username, tap Chat.
• From a profile: open the profile and tap Message.
• From a post or reel: tap the paper plane under the post to send it to someone with a note attached.
• From a story: type in the Send message field under the story. This is a story reply and lands in the same inbox.

Message requests, and why they matter

If someone who does not follow you sends a message, it goes to Requests instead of your inbox. You get no push notification. The sender sees the message as delivered and has no idea it is sitting in a folder you may never open.

For a personal account that is a spam filter. For a creator or a business it is the single biggest leak on the platform, because the people asking about your product are by definition often not following you yet. Requests are worth checking weekly at minimum.

What the status indicators mean

• Sent: the message left your device. In a request thread it can sit on Sent indefinitely.
• Delivered: it reached their account.
• Seen: they opened the thread. You can turn read receipts off in Settings, Messages and story replies.
• Typing indicator: the three dots appear only in threads you have both replied in.
• Grey silhouette and no delivery: usually means you were blocked.

Vanish mode, disappearing media, and unsending

Swipe up inside a thread to turn on vanish mode. Messages sent in that mode delete once both people leave the chat, and Instagram notifies the other person if they screenshot. Photos and videos can also be sent as view once or allow replay from the camera inside a thread. Unsending works on any message: press and hold, then tap Unsend. It disappears for both sides, though the other person may have already seen it.

Who can message you

Settings and privacy, then Messages and story replies, controls this. You can decide separately whether followers, people you follow, and others can reach your inbox, whether their messages go to Requests, and who is allowed to reply to your stories. Restricting story replies to people you follow removes most spam without touching your reach.

Why DMs are where creators actually convert

A comment is public and low intent. A DM is private and high intent, which is why the standard creator play is to move people from a comment into the inbox. You post a reel, ask people to comment a word, and everyone who does gets a private message with your link.
