How to Delete Comments on Instagram (and What to Do Instead)

To delete a comment on Instagram, find it, swipe left on iPhone or press and hold on Android, then tap the trash icon. That works for your own comments on anyone's post and for any comment on your own posts. To delete many at once, tap the dotted icon on your post and choose Manage Comments.

Deleting is only one tool, and often not the right one. Instagram also lets you hide comments, restrict accounts, and filter words before comments ever show up. This guide covers all four, then the part most people skip: what to do with comments that are not spam but still pile up.

How to delete your own comment

You wrote something you regret, there is a typo, or you just changed your mind. Deleting your own comment takes a few seconds.

  1. Open the post and tap the comment icon to see all comments.
  2. Find your comment. Scroll, or look for your username.
  3. iPhone: swipe the comment to the left. Android: press and hold the comment.
  4. Tap the trash icon. The comment disappears right away.

The menu looks slightly different on iPhone and Android, and Instagram moves things around between app versions. If you don't see a trash icon, update the app and try again.

Deleting also removes the replies under your comment. If someone answered you and you want to keep that thread, think twice.

How to delete a comment on your own post

On your own posts you can delete any comment, from anyone. The steps are the same as above.

  1. Open your post or Reel and tap the comments.
  2. Swipe left on the comment (iPhone) or press and hold it (Android).
  3. Tap the trash icon to delete it.
  4. The person is not notified that you deleted their comment.

Use this for spam, scam links, and abuse. For a one-off comment you simply disagree with, you have better options, which we get to below.

How to delete many comments at once

If a post got hit by a spam wave, deleting comments one by one is a waste of an afternoon. Manage Comments handles a batch.

  1. Open the post and tap the comment icon.
  2. Tap one comment (Android) or swipe it left (iPhone), then tap the dotted icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Manage Comments.
  4. Select the comments you want gone. One source puts the limit at 25 per batch, so repeat if you have more.
  5. Tap Delete. Or tap More Options to block or restrict those accounts in the same pass.

The block and restrict options inside the batch view are the useful part. If five spam comments come from five throwaway accounts, deleting them is half the job. Blocking or restricting the accounts stops the next wave from the same people.

One caveat: menu paths shift. Some guides describing this flow date back years, and Instagram has changed labels since. Treat the steps as a map, not a script, and follow what your app shows.

Hide vs delete vs restrict: which one to use

These three get confused all the time. They do different things.

  • Delete removes the comment for everyone. The thread under it goes too. Use it for spam, scams, slurs, and anything that breaks your rules.
  • Hide keeps the comment from the public but doesn't erase it. Comments caught by Hidden Words sit behind a "View hidden comments" link, so you can still review them. Use it for borderline comments you want to check later.
  • Restrict is the quiet option. A restricted person's comments are visible only to you and them. Everyone else sees nothing. Use it for a troll or an ex who isn't worth a public fight.

A simple rule: delete what is harmful, restrict who is annoying, hide what is unclear. Blocking is the loud version of restrict. The person can tell, so save it for people who actually threaten or harass you.

To restrict someone, tap their comment (Android) or swipe it left (iOS), tap the exclamation mark icon, then tap Restrict next to their username.

Stop the comments before they show up: Hidden Words

Cleaning up after the fact does not scale. If you get more than a few dozen comments a day, set up filters once and let them work.

  1. Go to your profile, tap the menu, then Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, then Hidden Words.
  3. Under Offensive words and phrases, turn on Hide comments. You can also turn on Advanced comment filtering.
  4. Under Custom words and phrases, tap Manage list and add your own terms: spam phrases, competitor names, "DM me to earn", "check my page".
  5. Turn on Hide comments for the custom list.

Matching comments are not deleted. They are hidden, and you can review them under View hidden comments. That is a good safety net, because filters make mistakes.

They also get fooled. One vendor ran a test where a plain keyword match caught only 31 of 335 comments that used invisible characters and lookalike letters. That is a single vendor's result, not a benchmark, but the lesson holds: spammers swap letters, so check the hidden list every week or two and add new variants.

What to put on your custom list

  • The phone numbers and handles that spammers paste into comments.
  • Phrases like "DM me" or "check my profile" if they never come from real customers.
  • Words tied to scams in your niche, such as "giveaway winner", "crypto", or "investment".
  • Common misspellings of words you already block.

Keep the list short and boring. Over-blocking hides real customers, and you won't notice until you read the hidden folder.

The comments you should not delete

Here is where most accounts go wrong. They treat every unwanted comment as spam. Most of it isn't.

Open any busy post and look. A big chunk of the comments are people asking the same thing: "Price?", "Link?", "Where do I buy?", "How do I join?". Those are buyers. Deleting them is like throwing away a stack of leads because they cluttered your desk.

Some people delete these to keep the comments clean. Others leave them and never answer. Both lose the sale.

Turn repeat comments into replies

A repeat question needs one good answer, sent fast. You can do that by hand: reply in the comments, then open a DM and paste the link. It works, but it means touching every single comment, and the people who comment at 2 AM wait until morning.

Comment-to-DM automation does it for you. A person comments a keyword, like "GUIDE" or "PRICE", and the system replies to their comment and sends the answer to their DMs. Your comments stay tidy because the question gets a public reply, and the buyer gets the link without waiting. If you want to try it, Elev8or Engage does exactly this.

Whatever tool you use, set it up with a clear prompt in the post: "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it." Then the comment section fills with a keyword you can answer, instead of ten variations of the same question.

A weekly comment routine that takes ten minutes

  1. Check hidden comments. Rescue the real ones, add new spam variants to the list.
  2. Batch delete. Open your two or three busiest posts, use Manage Comments, clear out the junk.
  3. Restrict repeat offenders so they stop coming back.
  4. Answer the real questions. Reply in public, send the details by DM.
  5. Note the top question. If it came up five times, put the answer in your next post or caption.

That last step is the one that pays you back. Every repeated question is a gap in your content. Fill it once and you get fewer of those comments next time.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting instead of answering. A deleted question is a lost lead.
  • Blocking when restrict would do. Blocking tells the person, and they often come back with a new account.
  • Over-filtering. A list with hundreds of words hides real people.
  • Never reading the hidden folder. Filters are guesses. Check them.
  • Ignoring the cause. Spam on one post often means the post got reach. Clean it, don't panic.

Deleting a comment is simple. The skill is knowing which tool fits which comment. Delete what is harmful, restrict who is annoying, filter what is predictable, and answer what is a question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the person know when I delete their comment on Instagram?
No. Instagram doesn't send a notification when you delete someone's comment on your post. They will only notice if they go back and look.
Can I delete all comments on a post at once?
Not with one tap. Manage Comments lets you select a batch, with one source putting the limit at 25 per round. For a post with hundreds of comments, repeat the process or turn off commenting on that post.
What is the difference between hiding and deleting an Instagram comment?
Deleting removes the comment for everyone. Hiding, through Hidden Words, keeps it out of public view but not erased: you can still find it behind View hidden comments and review it later.
What does restrict do on Instagram?
Restrict makes a person's comments visible only to you and them. Others can't see them unless you approve each one. The person isn't told they've been restricted, which makes it quieter than blocking.
Can I delete comments I left on someone else's post?
Yes. Open the post, find your comment, swipe left on iPhone or press and hold on Android, and tap the trash icon. It is removed immediately.
How do I stop spam comments on Instagram?
Turn on Hidden Words under Settings, then Privacy. Add the spam phrases you see, and check the hidden comments regularly because spammers use lookalike characters to get past filters.
