Meta's Business Agent Is in Instagram DMs, and It Is Priced Per Token

Meta Business Agent went globally available on WhatsApp on 3 June 2026 and is rolling into Instagram DMs, Messenger and Business Suite for selected accounts, with a waitlist for everyone else. Since 1 August 2026 it is billed at roughly $2 per million tokens across all three surfaces. That pricing detail is the story. Every DM tool creators use today charges a flat monthly fee per contact tier. Meta is charging per unit of conversation, and once the platform prices messaging by the token, the tools sitting on top of it eventually have to as well.

What changed

  • The agent answers customer questions, suggests products from a catalogue, books appointments, qualifies leads and can complete transactions, without a human in the thread.
  • Availability: global on WhatsApp since 3 June 2026. Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite are limited to selected accounts, with a waitlist.
  • Meta says more than a million businesses already run an agent on WhatsApp and Messenger.
  • Pricing since 1 August 2026 is about $2 per million tokens, with subscription packaging promised for businesses of different sizes.

Why it matters

Because the current generation of creator DM tools is built on a mechanic the agent makes obsolete. A comment-to-DM funnel uses a keyword because a keyword is the only thing a rules engine can match on. An agent does not need a trigger word. It can read "how much is the coaching" and answer it, which means the ceremony of asking people to comment GUIDE exists only because the tooling could not do better.

The pricing model is the second-order effect, and the larger one. Flat-fee DM tools are priced on contacts: you pay for the size of your list whether you talk to it or not. Token pricing is the opposite. A short qualifying exchange costs a fraction of a cent, and an account with 50,000 followers that has ten real conversations a day costs almost nothing to run. The same account on a contact-tier plan pays for 50,000 contacts. For most creators, usage pricing is dramatically cheaper. For high-volume broadcast operations, it is not.

Who benefits

  • Creators selling considered purchases. Coaching, services and courses are qualified through conversation, which is exactly what an agent does better than a decision tree.
  • Small operations with a real inbox problem. A few hundred genuine questions a week is where the agent earns its cost and a $99 a month tool does not.
  • Meta. Usage pricing on messaging converts an engagement surface into a metered revenue line, and it does so without an advertiser in the loop.
  • Not creators broadcasting. If the plan is to push the same message to thousands of people, an agent is the wrong tool and the wrong bill.

What creators should do

  1. Join the waitlist, do not rebuild anything yet. Instagram access is still selective and the subscription packaging is unannounced. A migration before the pricing is final is a migration you will do twice.
  2. Price your current tool per conversation. Divide the monthly fee by the number of real exchanges it produced. If that number is above a few cents, usage pricing will be cheaper for you.
  3. Keep the funnel logic outside the tool. The offer, the qualifying questions and the follow-up sequence should be written down somewhere portable. That is the asset. The tool that executes it is replaceable and about to be replaced.
  4. Do not hand the agent your close. Qualifying and answering are safe to automate. The moment the conversation turns into a sale, a human in the thread still converts better, and mistakes made by an agent are attributed to you.
  5. Assume the 24-hour messaging window still applies. An AI agent does not create new permission to message people. The rules that govern comment-to-DM funnels govern this too.

What to watch next

Watch the subscription tiers. Meta has said packaged pricing is coming, and packaged pricing at a low entry point would make the independent DM tools very hard to justify. Watch whether Instagram Pro access opens to creator accounts rather than just business accounts, since that determines whether this is a creator tool at all. And watch the incumbents: ManyChat and the rest are now competing with a first-party agent inside the platform they depend on, which is a difficult position to price against.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Meta Business Agent?
An AI agent that replies to customers inside WhatsApp, Instagram DMs and Messenger. It answers questions, recommends catalogue products, books appointments, qualifies leads and can complete transactions without a human in the thread.
Is Meta Business Agent available on Instagram?
For selected Instagram Pro accounts, with a waitlist for the rest. The global rollout so far has been on WhatsApp, where it became available worldwide on 3 June 2026.
How much does Meta Business Agent cost?
Since 1 August 2026 it bills at approximately $2 per million tokens across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Meta has said subscription packaging for businesses of different sizes is coming but has not published the tiers.
Does it replace tools like ManyChat?
Not yet, and not for keyword-triggered broadcast flows. For conversational qualifying it covers the same ground at a usage-based price, which is the harder competitive problem for a flat-fee tool.
Can it message people who have not contacted me?
No. Meta's messaging permissions are unchanged. You can reply within the 24-hour window opened by a user interaction; outside it you are limited to a single message under an approved use case.
