How to See Who Unfollowed You on Instagram (2026)

Instagram does not show you who unfollowed you and never sends a notification. The only method inside the app is to check the Following list on accounts you follow back, or to download your data and compare two exports over time. Third party unfollower apps do surface the list, and most of them ask for your password, which is how accounts get restricted.

The method that works inside Instagram

  1. Open your profile and tap Following.
  2. Instagram sorts this list with Least interacted with and Most shown in feed categories at the top.
  3. Open Least interacted with. These are accounts you follow whose content you barely see.
  4. Tap into each profile and check whether the button says Following or Follow Back. If they do not follow you, the mutual is gone.

This is slow and only practical if you follow a few hundred accounts. It also does not tell you when someone left, only that they are not there now.

The data download method, which is the accurate one

  1. Go to Settings and privacy, then Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
  2. Tap Download your information and request a copy in JSON format.
  3. Under the data range, you only need Followers and following, which keeps the file small and the export fast.
  4. Instagram emails a download link, usually within a few hours.
  5. Open followers_1.json and following.json. Anyone in following but not in followers does not follow you back.
  6. Repeat in a month and compare the two follower exports. Names in the old file that are missing from the new one are your unfollowers.

This is the only free method that gives you a real unfollower list rather than a not-following-back list, and it never touches your password.

Why most unfollower apps are a bad trade

  • They ask for your Instagram password. Instagram's official API does not expose a follower list to third parties, so these apps log in as you. That is a credential handover, and it is against Instagram's terms.
  • They trigger automated action blocks. Scraping your follower list at speed looks exactly like bot behaviour, and the block lands on your account, not the app's.
  • The data goes stale immediately. Most refresh on a schedule, so the list you are reading is hours or days old.
  • Free tiers are ad-funded. The product being sold is your follower graph.

If you use one anyway, pick a tool that authenticates through the official Instagram login screen rather than a form inside the app, and revoke its access from Settings, then Website permissions, when you are done.

How to see recent followers

Your Followers list is sorted newest first by default, so the top of that list is your most recent followers in order. There is no timestamp, but the ordering is reliable. On a Creator or Business account, Insights also gives you net follows and unfollows per week under Total followers, which tells you the size of the churn even though it will not name anyone.

Unfollows are a symptom, not the problem

Chasing individual unfollowers is a bad use of time. A follower who leaves quietly was never going to buy anything. The number that matters is how many of the people who do engage end up somewhere you own, like an email list or a DM thread, rather than staying a follower count that Instagram can throttle whenever it changes the feed.

That is what comment-to-DM automation is for. Someone comments a keyword on a reel, they get a DM with your link, and you capture an email before delivering it. Followers are rented. A list is not. Comment to DM automation covers the setup, and the free plan has no contact cap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see who unfollowed you on Instagram?
Not directly. Instagram sends no notification and provides no unfollower list. The accurate free method is to download your data as JSON twice and compare the two follower exports.
Is there a free app to see unfollowers on Instagram?
Several exist, but most require your Instagram password because the official API does not expose follower lists to third parties. That is against Instagram's terms and commonly triggers action blocks on your account.
Does Instagram notify you when someone unfollows you?
No. There is no notification for unfollows, and your follower count is the only visible signal that anything changed.
How do I see who does not follow me back?
Open your Following list and use the Least interacted with category, then check each profile for a Follow Back button. For a complete answer, compare followers_1.json and following.json from a data download.
How do I see my most recent followers?
Your Followers list is sorted newest first, so the accounts at the top are your most recent. Creator and Business accounts also get weekly follows and unfollows totals in Insights.
