How to See Deleted Messages on Instagram (What Actually Works)

Mostly, you can't. If someone unsent a message, it is gone from the chat for both of you, and Instagram has no official way to bring it back. The Recently Deleted folder does not cover DMs. The one official route is a Download Your Information file, and it only helps if you requested it before the message was deleted.

That is the honest answer, and it is worth knowing before you waste an afternoon on tricks. This guide covers what is actually possible, the short list of things worth trying, what is not possible, and the scams that prey on people who just lost an important conversation.

What happens when a message is deleted or unsent

There are three different things people mean by "deleted", and they behave differently.

  • Unsent by the sender. The sender long-presses their own message and taps Unsend. It disappears from the chat on both sides. You may see a line saying a message was unsent, but the content is not shown to you.
  • Deleted by you. You delete a whole conversation from your inbox. It is removed from your view only. The other person normally still has their copy.
  • Disappearing messages. Vanish Mode and similar settings remove messages by design once they have been seen and the chat is closed.

The difference matters because it decides who might still hold a copy. In the second case the other person probably does. In the first and third cases, nobody does.

What you can actually try

Here are the real options, ordered from most likely to work to least.

1. Ask the other person

If you deleted the chat on your side, the simplest fix is to message the other person and ask them to screenshot or copy what you need. It sounds obvious, and it is the only method that works for a conversation you deleted last week without having planned for it. If you are chasing a customer's address, order detail or a promise someone made in writing, just ask again. Most people would rather resend than have a mix-up.

If the other person unsent the message, they may still have it in a screenshot or in their own notes, but you cannot see it yourself. Asking them to resend it is your only move.

2. Download Your Information, if you requested it before

This is the only official route, and it has a big catch. The archive contains your account data as of the moment you requested it. Per the guides we reviewed, a deleted message only appears if the request was made before the deletion. If you never ran a download, there is nothing to find.

If you did run one earlier, or you want to be ready for next time, here is how to request it.

  1. Open your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Go to Settings and activity, then Accounts Center.
  3. Tap Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
  4. Choose your account and select what to download. Pick Messages.
  5. Pick a format. HTML is easier to read. JSON is easier to search with tools.
  6. Submit the request. Meta usually sends a link within a few hours, though it can take up to 14 days for very large accounts.
  7. Unzip the file when it arrives and open the messages folder. Each conversation sits in its own folder.

Two limits to know. Vanish Mode messages are not included. And menu names shift between app versions, so if a label doesn't match, search "download" in Settings and activity. Instagram's Help Center is the final word on current steps.

Even if you never need it for recovery, running a download now and then is a cheap backup of your customer conversations. If your DMs are part of how you make money, schedule one every few months.

3. Notification previews you already saw

If a push notification showed part of a message, that preview is the only trace you may have. Check whether your phone keeps notification history. Some Android phones have this under Settings, Notifications, Notification history, but it needs to have been switched on beforehand. Previews are partial and unreliable, so treat this as a long shot, not a plan.

What is not possible

  • Reading a message someone unsent. There is no setting, folder or hidden menu for this.
  • Finding DMs in Recently Deleted. That folder holds posts, stories and reels, not direct messages.
  • Recovering messages from before a download if you never requested one. No archive, no copy.
  • Seeing Vanish Mode messages again. They are excluded from the archive.
  • Asking Instagram support to restore a message. You can ask, but do not count on it. Messages deleted server-side are not something support can hand back.

If a site or video tells you otherwise, it is either wrong or selling something.

Why "recovery" apps are a trap

Search for this topic and you will find apps and websites promising to reveal deleted Instagram messages. They cannot do it. A third-party tool has no access to messages that Instagram deleted from its own servers. What many of them do is ask you to log in with your Instagram password, or to pay first. Some are used to collect personal information and take over accounts.

Rules that keep you safe:

  • Never enter your Instagram password anywhere except Instagram or the official Accounts Center.
  • Do not pay for a tool that promises to "recover" or "spy on" messages.
  • Do not install apps that ask for broad access to your Instagram account to "scan" your chats.
  • If you already did, change your password, log out of all devices, and turn on two-factor authentication.

Losing a message is annoying. Losing your whole account to save one message is far worse.

A quick checklist when you lose an important message

  1. Stop and think about who else has it. Did you delete the chat, or did they unsend?
  2. Ask the other person to resend or screenshot.
  3. Check your data download if you requested one before the deletion.
  4. Look for notification previews if your phone keeps history.
  5. Check other channels. If the conversation moved to email or another app, the detail may be there.
  6. Ignore recovery apps.

The better fix: stop needing to dig

Most people who search this are not curious about someone else's chat. They lost a message that mattered, usually a customer's. An address, a size, a booking time, a price someone agreed to. The pain is not that Instagram deletes things. It is that important details live inside a pile of unread DMs.

You can't fix the platform, but you can fix your side of it. Here is what works.

  • Answer fast and write the detail back. When a customer sends an order detail, reply with a recap in your own message: "Got it: size M, shipping to Pune, Friday delivery." Now the detail lives in your message too.
  • Move the details out of the chat. Copy anything that matters, like orders, quotes and dates, into a spreadsheet, a CRM or your notes the same day.
  • Use the same short replies for the same questions. Pricing, shipping and availability get asked daily. Saved replies mean fewer scroll-back moments.
  • Move serious conversations to a durable channel. Once a customer is ready to buy, send a confirmation by email or a form.
  • Keep a weekly inbox pass. Ten minutes to clear, tag and save the threads that matter.

Automation helps here too. If most of your DMs are the same five questions, Elev8or Engage can handle the repeat replies and comment-to-DM flows so your inbox holds mostly the conversations that need you. Fewer messages to lose track of, and nothing to dig for.

What to do right now

  1. Run a Download Your Information request today, so it exists before you need it.
  2. Pick the three kinds of message you can't afford to lose and decide where each gets copied.
  3. Write saved replies for your five most common questions.
  4. Delete any recovery app you installed and change your password if you gave it your login.

Instagram will not give you deleted messages back. That is a feature for privacy and a pain for business. Plan for it instead of fighting it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see unsent messages on Instagram?
No. Once a message is unsent it disappears from the chat for both people and Instagram offers no official way to view it. If the other person has a screenshot, they can share it, but you can't pull it up yourself.
Is there a Recently Deleted folder for Instagram DMs?
No. The Recently Deleted folder on Instagram holds posts, stories and reels you removed. Direct messages are not stored there, so deleting a chat or unsending a message does not put anything in that folder.
Can I recover deleted Instagram messages with Download Your Information?
Only if you requested the download before the messages were deleted. The archive reflects your data at the time of the request. Vanish Mode messages are not included. To request one, go to Settings and activity, Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, then Download your information and select Messages.
Do Instagram message recovery apps work?
No. Third-party tools can't get messages that Instagram deleted from its own servers. Many ask for your password or payment, and some are used to harvest personal information or take over accounts. Avoid them.
If I delete a conversation, does the other person lose it too?
No. Deleting a conversation removes it from your inbox only. The other person normally still has their copy, which makes them your best source for anything you need back.
Does Instagram notify someone when I unsend a message?
Sources agree there is no push alert, but they differ on whether a placeholder line appears in the chat. Either way, anything the other person already saw or screenshotted is not affected by unsending.
