To check DMs on Instagram, tap the paper plane icon in the top right of your feed. That shows your main inbox. Instagram also holds messages in three other places that never send a notification: the Requests folder, the General tab, and hidden requests. Most people with a public account have unread messages sitting in at least one of them right now.
The four places messages hide
- Primary inbox: people you follow and threads you have replied to. This is the only one that reliably notifies you.
- General tab: only appears if you turned on the split inbox. Instagram sorts lower priority threads here and badges it quietly.
- Requests: anyone who does not follow you. No push notification, ever.
- Hidden requests: a folder inside Requests holding messages Instagram flagged as spam or offensive, plus anything from words on your hidden words list.
How to check every folder
- Tap the paper plane icon in the top right of your feed, or swipe left from the feed.
- If you see Primary and General tabs at the top, check both.
- Tap Requests in the top right of the inbox.
- Inside Requests, scroll to the bottom and tap Hidden Requests if it appears.
- Open anything you want to keep. Opening a request moves it into your normal inbox and lets the sender see delivery status.
You can read a request without accepting it. Opening the thread shows the full message, and Instagram gives you Accept, Block, and Delete at the bottom. The sender is not told you read it until you reply.
How to check DMs on desktop
Go to instagram.com and click the paper plane icon in the top navigation, or go directly to instagram.com/direct/inbox. Requests appear as a link at the top of the thread list. Desktop supports text, images, and reactions, but not voice notes or video calls, and the hidden requests folder is not always exposed there. Check that one on your phone.
Why messages disappear or never arrive
- The sender is not a follower. The message is in Requests, not your inbox.
- A hidden word matched. Settings, then Hidden Words, filters messages containing terms on your list straight into Hidden Requests.
- The sender unsent it. Unsending removes the message from both sides with no trace.
- Vanish mode was on. Messages sent in vanish mode delete once both people leave the chat.
- You were blocked mid-thread. The conversation stays but new messages do not deliver.
- The account was deactivated. Their threads disappear from your inbox until the account returns.
Turn off the split inbox so less gets buried
If you do not want a General tab quietly collecting threads, go to Settings and privacy, then Messages and story replies, and turn the Primary and General split off. Everything then lands in one list. Requests still exist separately, because that folder is not optional.
Control who reaches you instead of checking four folders
Under Settings and privacy, then Messages and story replies, you can set separately whether followers, people you follow, and others can message you, and whether their messages go to Requests. Restricting story replies to people you follow removes a large share of spam without costing any reach.
If you run a business account, requests are the leak
Anyone asking about your product before they follow you lands in Requests with no notification. They see the message as delivered, assume you are ignoring them, and move on. On a public account that folder is where most of the lost revenue sits.
Keyword automation closes it. When someone messages or comments a trigger word, they get the answer instantly whether or not you have opened the thread, and the lead is captured either way. Auto reply to Instagram DMs covers both the native instant reply and keyword triggers.
