To sell Canva templates, design a template for one specific buyer, share it as a Canva template link, put that link inside a one-page PDF, and sell the PDF on Etsy, Gumroad or your own link-in-bio store. The buyer pays, downloads the PDF, clicks the link, and Canva opens a fresh copy of your design in their own account. Your original stays untouched.
That is the whole mechanism. The rest of this guide covers what Canva's license allows, how to pick a template people actually pay for, how to package and price it, and where to sell it. The same method works for Notion templates, which we cover at the end.
Can you legally sell Canva templates?
Yes. Canva's content license lets you design and sell templates using both Free and Pro elements, as long as you sell them as Canva template links. What you cannot do is export a design full of Pro elements as a flattened PNG or PDF and sell that file as the product, or resell Canva's own photos, graphics and fonts on their own. Read Canva's license and commercial use page before you list anything, since terms change.
- Allowed: selling a template link that opens your design for the buyer to edit.
- Not allowed: selling a flattened export that contains Pro elements, or selling Canva elements by themselves.
- Plan needed: creating a template link requires a paid Canva plan (Pro, Teams and similar). Free accounts cannot create one.
- Buyer side: if you use Pro elements, a buyer on the free plan may hit locked elements. Stick to free elements, or say "Canva Pro recommended" in the listing.
Step 1: Pick one buyer and one job
"Instagram templates" is a category, not a product. "30 carousel templates for real estate agents who post listings" is a product, because the buyer can see exactly what job it does. The narrower the buyer, the easier the listing title, the preview images and the price all become.
- Social media packs for one profession: realtors, coaches, salons, fitness trainers, bakeries.
- Business documents: rate cards, media kits, invoices, proposals, client onboarding packs.
- Personal: resumes, wedding invitations, meal planners, study planners.
- Creator tools: YouTube thumbnails, podcast covers, story highlight covers, media kits for brand pitches.
Check demand before you design. Search the idea on Etsy and look at how many listings exist and how many reviews the top ones have. Reviews mean people are buying. If you already have an audience, ask them: a story poll with two template ideas tells you more than any keyword tool. Our list of digital product ideas for beginners has more starting points.
Step 2: Build the template in Canva
- Start from a blank design at the right size. Building on top of someone else's Canva template and reselling it is not your design.
- Design 5 to 30 pages. Packs sell better than single designs because the value is obvious from the thumbnail.
- Use placeholder text that teaches. "Your listing address here" beats lorem ipsum, because the buyer knows what goes where.
- Keep fonts and colors editable. Use Canva's brand-style approach of 2 fonts and 3 to 5 colors so the buyer can swap their own in a minute.
- Test it as a buyer. Open the template link from a second, free Canva account and edit every page. Locked elements or broken layouts show up here, not after a refund request.
Step 3: Create the template link and package it
In Canva, open Share, find Template link, and copy it. Anyone who opens that link gets their own copy. Do not use the normal "edit" share link: that gives buyers access to your original.
Then make a one or two page PDF (you can design it in Canva too) with a large "Open your template" button that carries the template link, short instructions on how to edit and save, and a line on how to reach you if something breaks. This PDF is what you actually upload and sell. Etsy, Gumroad and most link-in-bio stores deliver it automatically after payment.
Step 4: Price it
Canva template packs on Etsy commonly sell somewhere between a few dollars and around $40, with larger, niche bundles at the top end. Check live listings in your exact niche before you set a number. Price on the job the template does, not the hours it took you: a realtor saving two hours a week on listing posts will pay more than a student buying a planner.
- Single design: low single digits. Good as an entry product or a freebie.
- Pack of 20 to 30 for one profession: mid-range, often $15 to $30.
- Bundle across several needs: the top of the range, sold as the upgrade.
Run the math before you launch. A $17 pack needs 59 sales to pass $1,000 before fees. That is about two sales a day for a month, which tells you how much promotion you need to plan for. Our guide to getting your first digital product sale covers that launch month.
Step 5: Choose where to sell
There are three realistic places. Each one trades fees against who owns the customer.
- Etsy: built-in search traffic, which matters if you have no audience. US sellers pay a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing, and Etsy may charge an Offsite Ads fee on sales it drives. Etsy keeps the customer relationship.
- Gumroad: simple setup, handles sales tax as merchant of record. 10% + $0.50 per direct sale, 30% on sales from its Discover marketplace.
- Your own link in bio: no marketplace traffic, but your followers buy without leaving your profile and you keep their email. Elev8or Bio has checkout and automatic file delivery built in. The Free plan takes a 9% platform fee, Pro ($9/mo) takes 5%, Elite ($25/mo) takes 0%, plus payment processing.
Most template sellers end up using two: a marketplace for strangers who search, and their own link for followers who already trust them. The email you collect on your own store is the real asset, because your second template sells to people who bought the first.
Step 6: Make previews that sell
Buyers judge templates by the thumbnail, so the preview is the sales page. Show the templates filled in with realistic content, not empty placeholders.
- First image: the pack in use, with a clear count. "30 realtor carousels" in large text.
- Second image: a grid of every page so buyers see the range.
- Third image: a before-and-after showing how fast the template changes to a different brand.
- A short screen recording of editing one page. It answers "is this hard to use?" before anyone asks.
Step 7: Promote it where your buyers already are
A template is easy to show on social media because the product is visual. Post the template in use, then a fast edit, then a customer result. Put the product link in your bio, and if comments ask "where do I get this?", an auto-DM on comments sends the link to everyone who asks. More promotion ideas are in our guide on promoting digital products without paid ads.
How to sell Notion templates
Notion templates work the same way. Build the workspace, make the page public with Allow duplicate as template turned on, and deliver that link after purchase. You can sell it through your own store, Gumroad, or the official Notion Marketplace.
- Notion Marketplace fee: 8% + $0.40 per paid sale, which covers processing, refunds and fraud checks. Creators outside the US pay an extra 1% on payouts.
- Payouts: every other Thursday, once your balance passes $20, with funds held 14 days for refunds.
- Best sellers: systems that save real time. Content calendars, client CRMs, budget trackers, study planners.
One caution: a Notion template link is easy to share once someone has it. Price for that, and add value buyers cannot copy, such as a setup video or updates.
Common mistakes
- Sharing an edit link instead of a template link. Buyers end up editing your original.
- Selling flattened exports with Pro elements. That breaks Canva's license.
- Generic packs for everyone. They compete with thousands of listings on price alone.
- Empty-placeholder previews. Buyers cannot picture the result.
- No way to reach buyers again. Selling only on a marketplace means every launch starts from zero.
