How to Add Multiple Photos to an Instagram Story (3 Ways)

To add multiple photos to an Instagram Story, you have three options. Tap Select Multiple in the camera roll to turn each photo into its own slide. Choose Layout to put several photos in one grid. Or add the photo sticker to layer photos on a single slide and arrange them yourself.

They look similar in the app, but they give viewers very different experiences. Pick the wrong one and your photo dump becomes a wall of taps, or a cramped grid nobody can read. This guide shows each method step by step, then tells you which to use when.

Method 1: Select Multiple (one photo per slide)

This is the one for a photo dump, a trip recap, or an event. Each photo gets a full slide, and viewers tap through in order.

  1. Open the Story camera. Tap your profile picture or swipe right from the feed.
  2. Tap the gallery square in the lower left corner to open your camera roll.
  3. Tap Select Multiple. It's the stacked-squares icon at the top of the gallery.
  4. Tap the photos in the order you want them to appear. A number shows on each photo.
  5. Tap Next. Edit each slide if you like: add text, stickers, or music.
  6. Post to your Story.

One guide puts the limit at 10 photos per batch. The number may change between app versions, so if you have more, post a second batch right after the first.

Each slide is edited on its own. That's useful, because you can add a caption to the funny one and leave the rest alone. It's also slower, so do it once you've picked your best photos, not before.

Method 2: Layout (several photos in one grid)

Layout puts photos side by side in a grid on one slide. It's the right choice for a before and after, a product lineup, or a three-photo recap you want people to see at once.

  1. Open the Story camera and swipe to the Layout option in the side menu (the grid icon).
  2. Tap the grid icon to pick a layout. The default is usually four equal squares; other styles show different splits.
  3. Take photos to fill each cell, or tap the camera roll icon to pick from your gallery.
  4. Tap the checkmark when the grid is full.
  5. Add text or stickers and post.

Photos appear in the order you choose them, so pick your most important one first. A 2019 guide says Layout combines two to six photos, while other guides describe a four-photo default. Treat the exact count as "it depends on your app version" and try it.

The tradeoff is size. Four photos in one slide means each is a quarter of the screen. That's fine for bold, simple shots. It's bad for detailed photos or anything with small text.

Method 3: The photo sticker (a custom collage)

The photo sticker gives you the most control. You start with one photo, then drop more on top, resize them, rotate them, and arrange them however you like. It's how people make collages, scrapbook layouts, and overlapping polaroid looks.

  1. Add your first photo or choose a background colour in the Story editor.
  2. Tap the sticker icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose the photo sticker. It looks like a small picture icon. If you don't see it, search "photo".
  4. Pick a photo from your camera roll. It lands on the slide as a sticker.
  5. Drag it, pinch to resize, twist to rotate. Repeat for each photo.
  6. Tap and hold a sticker to remove it or change its shape, if the option appears in your version.
  7. Post your Story.

One guide says there is no fixed limit on photo stickers; the limit is how many you can fit on one slide before it looks like a mess. In practice, three to five is the range where it still reads.

The copy and paste shortcut

There's a faster way to add a photo sticker. Open your gallery, tap Copy Photo from the share menu, then open the Story editor. A pop-up shows an Add sticker button. Tap it and the photo pastes onto your slide as a sticker.

This is handy when the photo is in a screenshot, a download, or an app other than Instagram.

Which method should you use?

Pick by the experience you want the viewer to have.

  • Select Multiple: a sequence. Trip photos, a day in the life, an event. Viewers tap through at their own pace.
  • Layout: a comparison or a set. Before and after, three product colours, a recipe's steps. Everything visible at once.
  • Photo sticker: a designed slide. Collages, scrapbook looks, a highlight reel of your month. You control the arrangement.

A simple test: if each photo needs to be seen clearly, use Select Multiple. If the photos need to be seen together, use Layout. If you want the arrangement itself to be the point, use the photo sticker.

Tips that make multi-photo Stories look better

  • Fewer is clearer. A phone screen is small. Four photos in a grid is the practical ceiling for photos with detail.
  • Pick a consistent look. Similar colours or lighting make a grid feel intentional.
  • Put the best photo first. Layout fills in selection order, and viewers decide in the first second whether to keep watching.
  • Leave space for text. If you want a caption, plan a clear area before you start placing stickers.
  • Use Select Multiple for anything you want people to look at slowly.
  • Check the safe zone. The top and bottom of the screen are covered by the profile bar and the reply bar.

Common problems

You can't find Select Multiple. Update the app. If it still isn't there, the feature may be rolling out in your region.

Layout looks stretched. Photos are cropped to fit each cell. Use pictures with the subject near the centre, and pinch inside a cell to reposition.

The photo sticker option is missing. Search "photo" in the sticker tray. Or use the copy and paste shortcut above.

Photos are blurry. Small cells shrink everything. Use fewer photos, or switch to Select Multiple for the important ones.

Three example Stories

  • Weekend trip: Select Multiple with eight photos, one caption on the best shot, link sticker on the last slide.
  • Product launch: one Layout slide showing the three colours side by side, followed by one full slide of the bestseller.
  • Monthly recap: a photo sticker collage of four moments, saved to a Highlight called "Recaps".

Notice that none of these use all three methods at once. Pick one as the main event and let the others support it, or the Story feels busy. Viewers should always know where to look first.

Make the Story do something

A photo dump is fun, but it's also a chance to send people somewhere. Put a link sticker on the last slide and point it to the page that matters: your shop, your booking page, or your latest post. If you have more than one place to send people, a link-in-bio page like Elev8or Bio gives them all of it in one tap.

Stories disappear after 24 hours, so save your best multi-photo Story to a Highlight. That way anyone who visits your profile later sees the recap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many photos can you add to one Instagram Story?
It depends on the method. Select Multiple has been described as taking up to 10 photos per batch, each on its own slide. Layout fits a handful in one grid, and the photo sticker has no fixed limit beyond what fits on one slide. Limits change between app versions.
How do I put two photos on one Instagram Story?
Use Layout and choose a two-cell grid, or add a photo and then place a second one with the photo sticker. Both put two photos on a single slide.
Why can't I see Select Multiple on my Instagram Story?
Update the Instagram app first. Features roll out gradually, so it may not have reached your account yet. Meanwhile, add photos one at a time or use the photo sticker.
What is the difference between Layout and the photo sticker?
Layout snaps photos into a fixed grid. The photo sticker lets you place, resize and rotate each photo freely. Layout is faster and tidier. The photo sticker is more flexible and takes longer.
Can I add photos from my camera roll as a sticker?
Yes. Open the sticker tray, choose the photo sticker, and pick an image from your camera roll. You can also copy a photo in your gallery and tap Add sticker when the Story editor opens.
Does the order of photos matter?
Yes. In Layout, photos appear in the order you select them. In Select Multiple, slides play in the order you tapped them. Choose your best photo first.
